What is Love?
Joyce Meyer has a 4-part podcast series right now called “What Is Love” that dives into the meaning of tangible love. Most of us tend to think of love in romance or relationship or even self-love. While all of these version are important, especially loving yourself before you can love others, love is meant to be more than that. The kind of love God calls us to references loving others like He has first loved us.
We also tend to believe that we are in need of receiving more love but the truth is we’re fulfilled when we love someone else — in tangible ways.
I’ll be honest, as a single girl in her 30s, Valentine’s Day can easily become something to want to fast forward through. But why? Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to just be about your significant other — or lack there of. It can be so much more than that whether you’re in a relationship or not.
Think of all the people in your community that you cross paths with everyday. Maybe you have a co-worker who’s lost a loved one recently or gone through a tough divorce. What about your cashier having a less than positive mood when you’re checking out? Or the person in a hurry and honking their horn behind you in the Starbuck’s line?
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

What if you spent the day observing who you could go out of your way to show some love to?

Some of us may be in seasons of feeling unloved and left out on big days like today but don’t miss the opportunity to turn it around for good. If you’re single or have time on your hands, maybe you can spend some of it with someone who doesn’t have a significant other. Perhaps that’s a girl friend of yours or a local charity giving back to abandoned women or children.
Need a couple of ideas? Here are a few to get you started…
- Pick up the coffee/juice tab of the person behind you in line.
- Grab a bag of Hershey kisses and hand them out to strangers you pass.
- Bake a dozen cookies and drop them off at a local business.
- Handwrite love notes and leave on someone’s doorstep.
- Call a lonely friend that you know might be struggling with singleness.
Have extra time and a lot more love to give? Make a list of 3–5 people you could write a letter to and let them know how much you love them. This could be to your parents or siblings, a close friend you haven’t seen in years, someone who helped you along your way or even your spouse (“future spouse” if you’ve not met yet).
There really is something special about handwriting a letter and sending it in the mail. When was the last time you got an unexpected personal note in your mailbox?
Don’t let your heart miss out on this Valentine’s Day. This is a great day to remind us of God’s greatest command — to love God and others. And what better day to revive action into showing God’s love to others than today?
12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. The kind of love that is no good has no action to it at all… We’re not called to “in” reach; we’re called to outreach.
