#NeverAgain Social Media Movement

If you’re a college student like me, you are probably afraid of being in the middle of a school shooting one day. If not, it is probably in the back of your mind at some point, you just don’t realize it. Over the years, there have been many tragic school shootings that have caused even more harm to this world than people realize. It is a scary thing to think about, that’s for sure. One of the most recent shootings happened on February 14th, 2018 in Parkland Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School was the target that day.

Days after the shooting, MSD student Cameron Kasky, along with other students, started the #NeverAgain movement. This movement was started to start staging protests demanding action to be taken to prevent similar school shootings.

#NeverAgain wanted to make gun control laws more in tact. So in tact, that the law raised the required age of buying a gun from 18 to 21. the law also increased funding for school security. The students also want to impact the 2018 elections by letting young adults who are turning 18 this year, that they should vote.

There was a protest march on March 24th, 2018 that was called the March Of Our Lives and it was held in Washington D.C. This protest involved millions of people in over 800 sites across the U.S. and other countries.

I believe #NeverAgain, is a fantastic start to raise gun control and make people aware that something needs to be done. It seems these students and the younger generation, such as myself, want something to be done after this last horrible event.

However; I do feel it is difficult to make people stop buying guns. I feel it is complicated to do so but, I have no doubt that it could be done. Like I stated, this movement is a great start to this.

Millions of people were brought together by this movement. These students did a great job in making people aware of what they needed to be aware of. These shootings need to come to an end and I think most people would agree. #NeverAgain brought out many people’s values and what they believe will happen due to this social movement.

The government and past presidents are just some of the millions of people who shared their wealth for this issue. In March, former president and first lady Barack Obama and Michelle Obama wrote a handwritten letter to the students of Parkland for their advocacy against gun control. This is just one of the many examples of how well these students touched the lives of people all over the country and world.

Some political leaders have actually attacked to students who started the #NeverAgain movement. While I understand how people can disagree with this, some do have their own opinions of young adults trying to change laws or even the world. It is not an easy task to conquer.

Twitter seemed to play this biggest role in this movement. The hashtag with the words Never Again was trending on twitter for days and all over the twitter world, people were becoming aware of this movement. On my newsfeed at the time, I saw many different opinions of the movement. When people make a movement such as this, one has to be aware that some might disagree. Twitter in my opinion, is the social media platform that can build the most popularity for anything.

Do you agree with the #NeverAgain movement? If not, that’s fine! If you’re reading, I encourage you to do some more research on this movement. I hope we can all come together and put an end to this movement as soon as possible. We need to stop letting all these lives be taken away way too soon. Let others around you become aware of this movement about the changes we need in this world. I pray it will all come to an end soon enough.
