In Defense of Defense Attorneys
I recently attended Crimecon 2023 (more articles on that later, but it was super interesting). For those that don’t know, Crimecon is a convention that brings together the public, victims or their families, reporters, and police investigators to talk about all things true crime. As a reformed criminal attorney (90 percent on the prosecution side), I loved it.
Except for one thing….
There was a panel with defense attorneys who came to speak to the crowd. They were met with tension and what can only be described as extreme rudeness. So much so that I wanted to clear the air a little regarding defense attorneys.
I’m tired of the disparaging remarks towards them. I’m really tired of the following comments said to them:
1) How do you sleep at night?
2) How can you defend someone you know is guilty?
3) Don’t you care about the victims?
4) You only do this for the money.
I want to make one thing abundantly clear.
IF THERE ARE NO DEFENSE ATTORNEYS, THERE IS NO TRIAL.
None. That means no justice for the families. That means no justice for the victim. I say justice because closure in the criminal area is largely a myth.
