There is a difference between having a father figure, and having a father. The former raises you during childhood, and the latter infantilizes you. I view atheism as a step in human growth, like adolescence. It is not a destination. Ultimately (if you grow up — and for most people this is no small if), you become a father or mother yourself.
When you become an adult, you don’t kill your father, you develop a new relationship with him. Atheism is just the start of a transition from some religious beliefs to a better moral system. One where you become the ultimate arbiter of your values.
