FORT MYERS, Fla. — Javier Joel Perez, 46, of Immokalee, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber to eight years in federal prison for drug and gun offenses. Perez was convicted of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the firearm involved in the offense. Perez pleaded guilty on February 21, 2024.

Court documents reveal that during a search warrant execution at Perez’s residence, Collier County Sheriff’s deputies found marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine packaged for distribution, along with a loaded firearm. Perez admitted ownership of the items. As a nine-time convicted felon, Perez is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

The case was investigated by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched on May 26, 2021, strengthens PSN by fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
