The Sanskrit term ‘Kāli’, also known as Kālikā (कालिका), literally means an entity that exists beyond Time (काल). She is the original energy of the ultimate consciousness. She transcends both space and time dualism. Parabrahman (loosely translated as The God in English language) is who she is.

Dakhineshwar Ma Kali

Mahākālī’s arms symbolize the fiery and compassionate character of Her limitless life-transforming force. The sword of Advaitic (non-dual) wisdom is raised by her upper left arm, prepared to cut the bonds of ignorance.

A severed head on her lower left arm, dripping with blood, is the symbol of sacrifice and submission to that supreme consciousness. It represents the demise of egotistical attachment to mundane things (Moha).

However, seeking the path towards Mahākālī is not for the weak and the faint-hearted. Only a seeker with calm mind and fearless core can attempt to move towards her. Inculcating fearlessness and calmness needs an emotional and mental overhaul! Initiation into Sadhna seems to me the only way towards it.

Sword of Mahākālī or Khaḍga (खड्ग) is composed from two Sanskrit root-words — Khaḍ (खद्)meaning strike, and Ga (ग) meaning to set forth into motion. It’s her sword that helps an individual to find an emotional and mental overhaul. Mahākālīs path leads to an immediate cessation of suffering and imposition. She does not entertain any kind of complacency or compromise from a seeker on the path of progress.

Mahākālī’s sword cuts away the unreal from Absolute-Real, or the obstacles and debris found in the vital and mental sheaths of human existence. By progressively disclosing the Aboslute-Reality in all of its aspects, the sword aids in the preparation of the seeker’s innermost being. That’s why she, through her sword, is the the final separator who brings an ultimate union.

However, the desire for freedom and quest towards Reality has to originate with the seeker. The sword of wisdom cuts the core of human obsession once the seeker reaches out, eliminating all desire to hold on to a routine life.

The seeker’s inner core has a hole that needs to be filled after this profound dissociation from the unreal. In order to make up for this void, Mahākālī kindly provides it with intuition — a pathway that allows one to immediately know and experience the supereme consciousness — all through her boundless compassion and love.

In addition to being a tool for eliminating ignorance, Mahākālīs sword of wisdom is a self-illuminating principle that lights the paths leading to the highest Advaitic (non-dual) experience and displays the radiant expanse of Absolute-Reality.

May we all find such an association with Mā Mahākālī — in this lifetime or the ones that are to come.

Jai Mahākālī!🔻🙏🏼
