Barney Kroger, a former employee of a grocery business, created Kroger in 1883. When Kroger’s employers, the owners of The Imperial Tea Co., declined to make him a partner, he went out on his own, opening a grocery shop called The Great Western Tea Co. with his life savings of $372. In 1902, he renamed the company Kroger Grocery and Baking Co., and by the end of the 1920s, it had grown to almost 5,500 outlets.
Kroger is credited for inventing the modern grocery shop as we know it. Customers didn’t have to shop at several locations because he sold bread and other necessities with other goods, and in the 1930s, it became the first grocery store chain to monitor product quality and follow strict product-testing requirements. It was the first store to use computerized scanning and organized consumer research in the 1970s. It also took out many of its regional competitors early on through a no-holds-barred acquisition strategy, resulting in complete industry control.
In 2017, there were 2,778 Kroger or Kroger-affiliated markets in the United States, with a total revenue of $122.7 billion. It operates the Kroger Marketplace chain of big-box shops, owns a large network of manufacturing factories, and is involved in a couple of non-grocery businesses as well. The 1929 Crash Narrowly Avoided Ruining Barney Kroger’s Business
Founder Barney Kroger invested in the founding of Provident Bank before selling his shares in 1928. Kroger was also instrumental in averting a bank run in 1933; when a local branch was threatened with a bank run, he withdrew $13 million in cash and exhibited it at the bank, assuaging any anxieties.
It was the first store to have parking lots surrounding it.
