In Videogames it is called “DLC”, now a wonderful Jack-of-All-Trades, specially for:
- beta-testing for free among consumers;
- rationing content or locking it up under price tags (Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 picked up quite the heat because of this)
— even pushing off full-price games for half the price, promising to update it in the future [one the most outrageous cases being last year’s Street Fighter where there wasn’t even a full Story Mode and (again) Capcom asked for a full-price tag].
Then, like Adobe, you can get the “base” game on a great discount, but the DLCs never get cut prices (several WB Games examples come to mind, like Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Origins); this even extended to consoles, where none of this ever happened before.
Notice the weight of the ones pushing these models…? Again, using piracy as an excuse.
