About Odessa
Odessa is a city in western Texas that was established in 1881. Those were the great days of the railroads when railroad men had incredible wealth and power; not surprisingly, Odessa’s history is linked to a railroad company. The Texas Pacific Railway extended its railroad lines deep into Texas, allowing settlers to arrive in the Odessa area.
Four years later in 1885, Odessa got its first Post Office, inspiring more settlers to come and help it grow. In 1891, Ector County was formally established and Odessa had the honor of being chosen as the County seat. For the following decades, Odessa was a farming and ranching town just like any other in the huge State of Texas; but that all changed when oil was discovered in 1926 at the W.E. Connell Ranch. Oil attracted a lot more people to Odessa than ever before.
Just one year later, Odessa became incorporated as a proper city; and a few years after that it was already a big oil center. Odessa’s oil would be essential for the military during World War 2 and continued to be one of the city’s most important industries after the war, making the city highly influential in the area and the entire State of Texas.
