Review: This riveting account by Helga Warren crosses WWII genres in a most unusual manner. The Enchanted Suitcase is a novel, a memoir, a WWII history reference, a romance — but mostly it’s a highly readable account of one German soldier’s wartime and POW experiences. The manuscripts authored by Ms. Warren’s father, Karlheinz Stoess, rested in a suitcase until long after his death, when Ms. Warren discovered the brief novels were actually first-person accounts of Feldwebel Stoess’s experiences on the Normandy front. Ms. Warren pulls the reader deep into the mystery by painstakingly examining her well-educated father’s chronology through documents, photos, and letters provided in the text. Detailed resources parallel the fascinating narrative and provide insight on wartime relationships, an idyllic occupied Paris, 1940’s music and theater, and German military culture. Particularly compelling are Feldwebel Stoess’s descriptions of the bullying and dysfunction of his Luftwaffe aerial surveillance unit, his dangerous friendships with other subtle resisters, and the Nazi dominance in the Aliceville POW camp. The unique story comes together as Ms. Warren describes the war’s effect on her parents’ postwar education and successful life in the US and Europe. Karlheinz Stoess gifted the world two tales of priceless historic value, veiled memoirs that waited in the dark for over seven decades. Now Ms. Warren’s meticulous contextual research, insight, and exquisite writing have brought these luminous stories to life.

Review: I greatly enjoyed “The Enchanted Suitcase” by Helga Warren. The contents of the book are taken from the writings of her father, Karlheinz Stoess — a German soldier during WW11. He had a brief romance in wartime Paris, was captured in Normandy and served time as a POW in America.
His experiences were interesting and his manner of writing striking. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts, feelings and experiences of a regular German soldier and that time in history.
When I read, I often take notes of things I want to know more about in order to look them up later so I was pleased to find that at the end of each section of the book, the author provided further clarification on subjects that might be unfamiliar to her readers.
We often tend to see our parents as only that, our parents, not actually people who had their own life of joys and sorrows before we were born. The letters the author discovered in the “enchanted suitcase” opened up her father’s past both to her and her readers.

Review: I read the Enchanted Suitcase in one evening. Why? It is illuminating. How often do we read about the German soldier’s side of the story during WWII? My prejudice to the subject came from admiring ONLY my father because he flew with the RAF. Yet, the author’s “objective” approach didn’t allow me to put the book down until I read the last line. THIS BOOK IS a TREAT!!!
