Go the extra mile. Be different.

I came really close to not doing this blog. I hesitated and thought, “What if I sound dumb?” …because let’s be honest, I will! “What if people don’t read it?” …because many will not! “What is my writing sucks?” …because I’m clearly not a great writer (yet!). Then, I received an e-newsletter from inc. Wire. The subject line read “7 things Steve Jobs said that you should say every single day.” This is such a white girl quote, but I have to say, everything happens for a reason and that newsletter popped into my inbox at just the right time.

I’m not going to go into details of the article- if you want to read it, I provided the link below. I will however say, I read the first two points, and they inspired me so much that I posted my 1st blog post before I finished reading. I was reminded from the first two, short paragraphs that the fear of failing and hesitating to do what you want can completely stop people from taking any action at all, and that people want to and SAY they are going to go the extra mile, but very few do. As the post said- people who come close stop and think, “Wait… no one else is here… why am I doing this?” and they leave and never return, and that is why the extra mile is such a lonely place, but it is also why it is where there is the most opportunity.

Facing fears and failing seem like the most frightening thoughts, but if we never get over them, and if we are afraid to fail- we will never truly know our potential. This seems like such a cliché, generic post- but I have realized that myself, and many others, need to be reminded of their potential and to always keep pushing forward. Someday, hopefully soon, I’ll look back and be grateful for “career hopping” and entering into an industry in which I had zero experience and didn’t understand the language. I mean.. SQL Server, Java, c# and c++ …What IS this? I’ll have it down in no time- right?! Oh, and c# is NOT “c hashtag,” and c++ is not “c add-add.”

Heather (Heather Manley is our President/CEO and also who I report directly into) has her own distillery. It’s called Crooked Water and let me tell you- she makes a phenomenal lime-infused gimlet with her gin! A distillery. With all of the kettle one’s, Grey gooses (geese? Ha), and Tattersall’s of the world- why the hell would you use your time and money and take the risk to start a distillery? I’m sure those thoughts crossed her mind, and other people’s too. I’ll end this paragraph with saying that Sun Country airlines just signed her vodka aboard all of their flights. What if she never brought her idea to life?

Entrepreneurs and business owners (amongst many others) fascinate me. Their will and determination to not let anyone or any thought stop them is nothing short of amazing.

In other news..

Heather and Sean (Heather’s brother, our COO AND a six sigma black belt- not to be confused with karate, flew to Boston this week to receive the Corporate Investment and Community Impact (CiCi) Award. Woo!

Keep improving yourself. Work hard. Do the extra thing. Be different.
