Eli — the argument you outline has another possible endpoint. We could actually rely on the federalism baked into our system, devolve more power back to the states, and retain authority in the central govt for a select few things. Leave it to the states to enact social and criminal policy, and leave it to the national govt to prevent internal trade wars, regulate external trade, and provide for the national defense. no secession or breakup necessary.
