It isn’t about who owns the device, I don’t believe that was ever questioned in any of these circumstances. The problem is really a matter of consumer awareness or maybe vendor transparency regarding what actually enables the device. Can it stand alone or does it rely on a backend service running in “the cloud”? Can it operate on its own or must it talk to someone else for everything it does.

If that is made painfully obvious up front, consumers could more easily decide if they have enough faith in the company to trust that their product will have a meaningful future in their home. Alternatively, the above concerns could mostly be mitigated if any significant part of the product is open sourced.
