Today the internet taught me about #decoratedmush
Musings about things I encounter on the internet — pt. 1
Today I learned about something called #decoratedmush. Actually weird hashtags are nothing unusual these days and I have to admit that some are still a mystery to me; however this one struck me as especially noteworthy.
Let me explain: Smoothies and all kinds of porridge are quite popular these days yet there is a problem: they look pretty shitty on your Instagram pictures.
As sharing is caring and we are all proud of our Saturday morning creations, there is only one solution: Put some berries on top. Or nuts. Or both. Poppy seeds will do the trick or maybe something more fancy called chia seeds. I do it, too. As a convenient side effect toppings even improve taste. But: wether you like it or not, nowadays this means that you created #decoratedmush. Congratulations!
It’s that easy. If you are really up for a challenge though, go ahead and create landscapes of quinoa porridge, floating in a sea of avocado spinach pulp. Populate them with little chia seeds frolicking next to cubic mango mansions, reaching out to their fellow seedlings on almond boats to help them in their fight against the grape invasion coming in from the granola mountains…
Wait, what? Suddenly childhood memories come rushing back into my head. Nighttime meals of lovingly decorated semolina pudding created by my Mom, so I would not shy away from that plate filled with plain off-white pulp. Sometimes she would even compensate the whole eating process by adding a layer of helicopter noises! Chia seeds lifting up into the air, escaping those dreadful quinoa islands, hoping for a better life and for a stubborn child to open her mouth.
I start to wonder about all those likes our mothers and fathers were denied because there was no Instagram, no #decorativemush, only porridge or pudding with stuff on top and ungrateful children who screamed for nutella lakes instead. Sorry Mom!
