Uber gives $1.2 million to Girls Who Code

Many of you also probably saw the announcement earlier this summer on Bozoma Saint John moving from her leadership role at Apple to join Uber as Chief Brand Officer.
Who does that during these types of times? Someone stellar who enjoys a challenge and is not afraid of a fight! Or could be someone who sees a possibility to be a part of real change… real positive change.
“Saint John was a standout at Apple’s WWDC last year (2016) when she presented for Apple Music. Saint John joined Apple through its acquisition of Beats Music, where she helmed its marketing efforts.” — Sara Ashley O’Brien, CNN Tech

At the end of last week, you may have also seen that directly following the Uber announcement Kimberly Bryant and @BlackGirlsCode communicated that they turned down a $125,000.00 grant from Uber. Kimberly is a focused and principled woman. The one thing I have always admired about her is that she very clearly knows her worth, and it’s a beacon for her. Second, is that she’s a Master Brander.

Over social media, a strong and loyal community rallied. Black Girls Code managed to raise a majority of the grant amount with in 24 hours… entirely from direct donations. The catalyst was the gauntlet thrown down over Facebook by Kristy Tillman, head of design, at Slack with a donation of $1,000.00. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.
