Great Post.
However, the O’reilly survey is much data but little relevant information.
Let me point out some issues with the report.
- Remuneration adjusted for purchasing power parity is a more accurate method of comparing salaries
- Developers definitely do not earn up to $30k (median) in Africa. Apparently the 70 or so respondents are a sample space comfortable enough to take an O’Reilly survey and do not accurately reflect the larger community who are still struggling with basic amenities — power, internet, devices etc
- Go and Scala are obviously not the most lucrative languages. Languages with low demand counter intuitively end up paying higher for the few experienced enough to take up the opportunities. Reality is, you’re more likely to get a job writing PHP than with Golang but if you do get the Go offer, it is more likely to be higher paying
- Women earning less isn’t ridiculous. Surveys have shown that the disparity between male and female pay is less down to gender. The two biggest factors for earnings are career choices and qualification.
