Horn Please, St Georges Road Fitzroy North
Tuesday the 4th of March, 2014- Always a winner!
Last Tuesday night- the 4th of March, we treadlied around to Horn Please for a vego feast. Glad we did as well, given how full we were after. We all had the vego banquet- pretty good value for $35, but with the usual hindsight, (geez that’s a good thing!!), we could and prob should have just gone a la carte. SO. MUCH. FOOD. why this is surprising, I don’t know- given that it was a banquet.

So..entrees- heaps- fat, always tasty samosas, Papdi Chaat- the Indian Street food that Dave said is EVERYWHERE in India- (and costs 20c!!)- loooking quite lovely with pomegranate seeds- and pretty damn tasty as well, crispy deep fried mango rolls- not so good, pretty bland tasting, as well as papadums and the usual array of sauces- the green, “mint” sauce, brown, tamarind tasting and the obligatory yoghurt sauce.
We were all nearly full by the time the mains arrived- but we kept eating. Loads of small looking curries, dahl, rice and garlic naan (freshly made by the looks and cooked in a tandoor oven). My fave was the pumpkin curry, just delightful. Twangs of coconut and tamarind. The dude obviously felt sorry for the people that actually ate meat on the table, and brought out a coconut curry with rockling. Have to say the sauce was delish. Other curries included the Punjabi Khadi (vegetable fritters), and the aloo bengan (potato and eggplant cuzza). Not a massive fan of aloo in curries (not really a massive fan of big chunks of spud in general), however the eggplant was awesome. The dahl was a black lentil dahl, pretty thick- funny texture, I personally really liked the taste, some of the others didn’t.
And to top it all off..desert. The (apparently) most famous of indian deserts: Gulab Jamun (indian doughnuts)- “ really nice, wouldn’t like to have a whole one” (Steve), and the home made kulfi icecream of 2 different flavours- cardamon, pistachio and honey (my fave) and cinnamon, cloves (that’s prob why I didn’t like that flavour as much- cloves) and honey.
Whoah…..Indian overload. Won’t be back there for a while, cause we’ve pretty much exhausted all of the vego options on that menu! Waiting for the seasonal change.
shame it’s only a 2km treadly home…
Oh yeah, and the origin of the restaurant’s name… “Horn Please” is painted on all of the trucks in India, so that people honk when passing!!
