You have hit on a truth that is not only reflected in the recent Trump campaign. The Tea Party thought police that have been rooting out conservative incumbents that were not ideologically pure enough is not that different from communist political officers in the days of Stalin or Mao. Whenever we with think that our view should be forced on everyone because we are right, we become totalitarians. Until we will stand up to our own when they go too far, the power-hungry will continue to be a threat to freedom. There is no liberty without respecting the right of individuals to have different views and act on their own priorities.
