Just some thoughts passing by
Different languages. Barriers. Just by hearing this can turn someone’s stomach upside down or cause uneasiness, but for a few others, it’s a completely distinct (and enjoyable) matter. Languages constitute a huge part in one’s culture, and it’s safe to say that venturing a new language, is like getting to know one’s background. As for me, I’ve been learning Korean for quite a while now, as well as Japanese. (I’m still at a novice level with this one, ごめんなさい) I wouldn’t go as far as to boast that I have conversational skills in Korean already, but after practicing continuously, I can say that it really pays off in the end. Back then, I’d be so clueless when hearing these unfamiliar words, but now, I understand it. However, before anyone else, including myself, reaches that “oh so euphoric” level of comprehension, it will take several mistakes and awkward moments trying to pronounce words.. like a first year old. Sure, it’s not easy. Nobody said it was. By this time, I have a question for you. Do you really just stop and let all your efforts go to waste just because the road got a little bumpy? I’m not even just pertaining to learning a new language. But life in general. We often find ourselves afraid and too tired to carry on once we come face to face with fear. We crumble and shut down, and feel as though whatever energy’s left in us will not be enough to get us back up and continue what we’ve started.
If you’re reading right now and this is what you’re going through, just remember this. “The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory.” You may have been off to a rough start, but it doesn’t mean that it will stay that way forever, unless, YOU do something about. That’s right. It’s up to you to decide. Will you be intimidated with the thorns and spikes ahead, or will you see it through? You choose.
Now, going back, my journey with learning a new language was anything but easy, but boy am I glad that I chose the latter. It feels amazing to be able to understand what once seemed too difficult for my mind to grasp. People say it may take forever to learn some languages, and only a short period with some. Codswallop. I say, it all depends on you. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.
Take the first step — believe you can, and you will. Goodluck.
