👀 Introduction

I was recently planning a trip to Pondicherry with my friends, and as I was the one who was the most excited, I had to do all the planning. From transport to stays, to restaurants and activities, I took charge of everything. Whilst planning all this, there were times when I had many ideas where this whole process of planning could be made simpler and less cumbersome.

So this Case Study is my take to design an efficient travel app.

📌 The Problem

Planning a trip by oneself has always been a cumbersome task, requires a lot of patience and constant shifting from one app to another to find the best prices for travel and stays and to make a good itinerary.

🕵️‍♂️ Overview

The “Plan It” is a feature I introduced into a travel app where users can book flights, stays, cabs and activities through a streamlined process with comparisons from multiple websites to get the best deals.

The “List” feature helps the user in research related to the places they can visit for sightseeing, food, drinks and other activities at the destination.

“Ghost” helps in making this app Smart which generates a customized and editable itinerary which includes Must try/ famous restaurants and places to explore.

🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏽Target audience

Do you plan trips yourself? Do you find it extremely cumbersome?

If yes! Then this app is for you!

The target audience varies from students, families, couples, bachelors basically everyone who wants to travel and explore. It can be for a work trip or your honeymoon, we got it all.

🧠 Research

The first step in research was to analyze our competitors, to know their plus points as well as their pain points. Learnings of them gave me insights into the travel industry which I then used to design solutions in this case study.

The next step in research was to interview people to get to know if the problems I had while planning, overlap with the problems they faced and to get to know about any new problems they faced.

In this section I basically,

Verified my assumptions + Acknowledged new problems

These are some insights I gathered from the interviews -

  1. Gen Z’s love to self plan trips. They are happy with the freedom to do anything and everything of their choice.
  2. The Millennials generally focus more on budgeting and getting things done quickly as they tend to be very “BUSY”
  3. The Gen X want simple things, they hate complicated stuff. Sweet and Simple is their ideology. (Though they can ask their sons and grandsons to plan for them but otherwise “Trippy Hai Naa” 😜)

♒ Ideating and Information Architecture

I analyzed various competitor travel apps and drew some mental images of how my app should look like and noted some points regarding it on my notion for later use.

I’ve described the information architecture for the overall app , i.e. how a user will go about the app.

Information architecture of the app

📱Final Screens

I usually don’t make low fidelity wireframes as I do it in mind itself. I start with High fidelity wireframes itself and then iterate on them until I’m satisfied, to get the final screens.

  1. Explore Screen

Explore and find new places to visit! What better than finding and booking trips all in one app. I have categorized places under New, Trending, Our Pick and Low-Key, which basically covers destinations for travelers with varied choices. Each card contains multiple experiences shared by people who have recently visited that particular destination in the form of blogs!

If you already have a destination in mind, go ahead search for it and read the experiences shared by people on the app!

2. Plan It Flow

I called this a flow because flight booking, stay and cabs all can be done in a simple flow or in one go. A progress bar shows where you have reached in the process of booking your trip!

Flight Booking — Have tried to keep it as simple as possible.

  1. I have included the option for multi-city flight booking also which comes in very handy when visiting multiple places.
  2. 3 simple colors to identify cheap, medium and expensive flights.
  3. Showing the best, cheapest and fastest possible flights whatever your priority is.
  4. The MVP, compare prices! See what other Apps have to offer for the same flights.

Stay Booking — The next section of the flow,

  1. Stays have been categorized into Luxe, Homestay, Boutique and Trending.
  2. A short and crisp detail page of the stay, includes the photos, description, features and services, location and reviews.
  3. Add multiple stays feature, add multiple stays if you will be hopping from one town to another on your trip!
  4. Compare prices of stays with other apps to get the best deal!

Cab Booking — Book a ride to roam around your destination!

  1. Categorized into Airport Cab, Taxi and self drive to cater needs of the user.
  2. Hourly rentals, the user can rent vehicles on hourly basis rather than per day basis.
  3. Simply search for the car you are looking for or apply filter to find sedan, SUV, luxury cars or even Scooters!

The Flow is completed!

3. To-do Screen

This includes the screen that I personally enjoyed the most designing! This one is for all the lazy ones out there who don’t want to search through thousands of websites just to find places to see, eat or drink! I’ve got you’ll covered!

Scroll through the top recommendations of people who have already visited the place and then choose and add to list where you want to go! We give out tips too, so that you have a great experience! Separate sections for Things to do and Food and drinks.

Now, Once you are done adding to your list, you can view it using “My List” option. You can customize your list to add things which weren't included in the previous page too.

You can make your own itinerary for each day of your trip!

But! If you are a Sloth bear just like me, Ghost comes to your rescue!

Ghost is an AI bot which will generate an itinerary for you for your whole trip! This itinerary is completely customizable i.e, you can add or remove items as per your own needs and interests!

Thanks for reading.

This was my First ever Case Study! It was fun!

A feedback would mean a lot to me!

P.S — The trip to pondicherry got cancelled as usual. But it’s okay, because now I have a great case study!😛
