What Her Excellency Claudia Sheinbaum, President-Elect of Mexico, Can Learn from President Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, extended her heartfelt congratulations to Mexico’s president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, on her historic victory in the 2024 Mexican general elections. Sheinbaum’s win marks a significant milestone as she becomes Mexico’s first female president at the age of 61, following her tenure as Mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023. This achievement has been celebrated globally, including in Tanzania, where it has been met with great excitement.

As Sheinbaum prepares for office, she can draw valuable lessons from another pioneering female leader, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania. Over the past three years, President Samia has demonstrated transformative leadership, significantly boosting Tanzania’s economy, healthcare, education, and tourism sectors. Here are key areas where President Sheinbaum can find inspiration and actionable insights from President Samia’s achievements.

President Samia has enhanced Tanzania’s economy by increasing opportunities for private sector participation, maintaining middle-income status, and managing inflation effectively. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has shown remarkable performance with record-breaking tax collections, indicating a positive trend in fiscal management.

The Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) registered 1,188 projects between March 2021 and March 2024, with an estimated capital investment of $15.041 billion, generating 345,464 jobs. These efforts highlight the importance of creating a conducive environment for foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade.

Under President Samia’s leadership, Tanzania’s healthcare sector has improved significantly. Investment in infrastructure has increased the number of healthcare facilities, patient beds, and ICU facilities. The government’s efforts to strengthen the availability of medicines and medical supplies have markedly improved healthcare services.

President Samia’s administration has made substantial investments in education, focusing on increasing funding for schools, improving teacher training programs, and enhancing the quality of education. Efforts to make education more accessible, particularly in rural areas, have been pivotal.

As the first female president of Tanzania, President Samia has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. Her administration has implemented policies promoting gender equality and increasing opportunities for women in various sectors. President Sheinbaum, as Mexico’s first female president, has a unique opportunity to champion gender equality, empowering women across the country and setting a precedent for future generations.

President Samia has significantly boosted productivity in the agriculture sector, which is crucial for Tanzania’s economic growth. The agriculture budget saw a substantial increase, and investments in irrigation infrastructure have expanded.

One of President Samia’s notable achievements is revitalising Tanzania’s tourism sector. Her involvement in producing “The Royal Tour” film helped increase the number of tourists and significantly boost foreign exchange earnings.

Tanzania has undertaken major investments in physical infrastructure under President Samia’s leadership. Projects such as the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric-Power Project, port capacity expansion, and Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) construction are transformative initiatives.

Since independence, Tanzania’s sustained peace and tranquillity have been key to attracting FDI. President Samia’s efforts to maintain a stable political environment and implement policy, legal, and regulatory reforms have been crucial.

Her Excellency Claudia Sheinbaum can draw valuable insights from President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s transformative leadership in Tanzania. President Samia’s achievements exemplify the profound impact of visionary leadership, providing a roadmap for President Sheinbaum as she embarks on her historic presidency. As Margaret Thatcher famously said, “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”
