4 aspects I look at when I am searching for art!

It can often be hard to start making an art collection. Therefore, I would like to share some of the things I’m looking for when searching for art.

Generally, I look at four things: Uniqueness, the message, the materials and the time and effort the artist has put into an artwork. All qualities do not necessarily have to be fulfilled in one piece of artwork — but the more the merrier.

The importance of materials

I am a sucker for great materials and the combination of different materials. It applies to my art selection as well as my remaining interior design — where I like to play around with contrasts.

I can’t think of anything more boring than having only oil paintings or prints in glass frames hanging in my home. As a matter of fact, this is one of the main reasons, why I started KUVIO. I wanted to start a private art collection, but all I could find was posters in glass frames. Not particularly satisfying. You can read more about KUVIO and why I started this business on kuvio.dk.

The effort behind the art

I love when it is clear that the artist has put a lot of effort into an artwork. When you can see that he or she has put several hours/days/months into it and it wasn’t an easy task to produce this specific artwork. No matter who made it, I have difficulty falling in love with a colored dot on a piece of paper or very “simple” motives/graphical works. I need more creativity in my art collection.

Is it a unique piece?

I am looking for originals. I am impressed when I see an artwork that I don’t feel I have seen before. Moreover, I think it is awesome when an artist has a unique style that characterizes his or her art. Something that makes it easy for anyone to recognize this particular artist’s work, even when you haven´t seen that specific artwork before. An example of this is Michael Kvium, whose obscure figures/portraits most people find recognizable.

Does the artist have a message?

I love abstract art that I don´t necessarily need to relate to but can enjoy as is. The aesthetic expression is probably the highest priority most of the times when I choose artworks for my home. However, I do enjoy to combine aesthetic beautiful works with art that I actually do need to relate to. For example, I like art that tries to reflect the world we live in or art that highlights topics that can be difficult to talk about, and even art that focuses on something we might not take seriously and ignore.

A contemporary artist I admire a lot is Ai Weiwei. He does a great job informing people through his artworks, e.g. in his art about the immense refugee challenges.
