If you are visiting Goa, Dudhsagar waterfall is a must visit for a variety of reasons. While multiple people would have observed that the place is crowded and takes almost a 1/2 to 3/4 of your day, it is still worth the time.
This travel blog is to provide information for tourists who are looking at visiting Dudhsagar and enjoying the waterfall.
Note — There are some rave reviews on taking the train route to Dudhsagar; I don’t have that experience…this is more about the road travel to get to Dudhsagar
What is special about Dudhsagar?
- 300 metre waterfall on Mandovi River — One of the largest waterfall in India
- Waterfall is split into four layers; scenic view
- Railway line which splits the waterfall, adds to the Scenic ViewWhat makes this a top attraction in Goa?
- Scenic drive from Goa to Colem (Base location to get to Dudhsagar) — Nice roads, just GREEN !
- Experience of off roading in a jeep — The road which connects to Dudhsagar goes through Bhagawan Mahaveer Park and this road gives people a first hand experience of off roading
- Climb upto the falls — 1/2 kilometre walk to get to the falls; rocky terrain with very scenic waterbody in backdrop
- The waterfalls itself — The view is stunning; based on the season you get there, the lay of the land will change
- Getting closer to the waterfall and taking a shower in the massive stream of water
How to get to Dudhsagar?
- Get to Colem from Panjim/Madgoan / Other parts of Goa.
- Colem to Dudhsagar is a distance of 12 Kms and will take ~ 40 minutes
- Jeep (Bolero, Trax) available for hire; fairly organized — Rates will be 400 Rs per person or 2800 per Jeep (7 people)
Additional Pointers
- Rent a life jacket while you hire a Jeep — Without a life jacket they will not let people go upto Dudhsagar. Cost of this is 30 Rs per life jacket and is completely worth it
- The Jeep counter opens at 8 AM and closes at 3.30 PM — The sooner you get there the better. If the crowd gets overboard, the authorities will close down the counter.
- There are approximately 450 Jeeps plying to Dudhsagar, trust the place to be crowded
- In rainy season, if the water level soars then the place might get shutdown keeping in mind safety of people
- Options for food is limited at Colem/Dudhsagar; pl be prepared with some options here
- The terrain is slippery; watch out if you have elderly people and kids with you. Keep a watch for your camera; I almost lost mine.
- Do remember to carry change over dress; you will get wet mostly and if you want to get into water (highly recommended) then you need change over dress
- The water is ice cold and you will feel this more when you get closer to the landing of the falls; standing underneath the falling stream of water is an awesome experience.
- You will get about an hour to hour and half to spend at Dudhsagar; the Jeeps will need come back after that — So plan your time wisely
- There are huge fishes in the water pool (where the waterfall lands); you can see them dive for food — Time for some Foot Spa?
