OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, was rocked by drama in November 2023 when CEO and co-founder Sam Altman was abruptly fired by the board. What followed was a week of chaos, with rumors swirling, interim CEO appointments, employee revolts, and ultimately Altman’s return to the company just 5 days later. Here’s a breakdown of what happened in this strange saga and what it might mean for the future of AI.

The Abrupt Firing

On November 17th, Altman was fired over a video call while he was in Las Vegas. The board cited “dishonesty” but gave no clear reasons. Co-founder Greg Brockman was also demoted but quit in protest. The moves stunned the tech community given Altman’s high profile and OpenAI’s recent $86 billion valuation.

The Aftermath

Rumors and Revolts With no explanation from the board, rumors circulated about conflicts over OpenAI’s direction and Altman’s side projects. Employees demanded answers and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella voiced support for Altman. Interim CEO appointments came and went rapidly amid the chaos.

Then 747 of OpenAI’s 770 employees sent the board an ultimatum: resign or we’ll all leave for Microsoft. They had aligned themselves firmly on Team Sam.

Altman’s Return In yet another surprise twist, just 5 days after his firing, Altman regained his CEO position as part of a new agreement with the board. The old board members resigned and were replaced. Altman and Brockman both came back, ready to continue their AI research.

Why Was Altman Fired?

There’s still no official explanation for Altman’s abrupt firing. Reports suggest simmering tensions between him and the board over OpenAI’s direction — whether to focus on profits or research mission — as well as his outside projects.

There are even rumors researchers discovered advanced AI with “potential to pose a threat to humanity”, possibly related to AGI research. This may have been alarming enough for employees to write warning letters about it.

Whatever the full reasons, the power struggle exposed cracks inside the company trying to lead the AI revolution. For now, Altman is back in control but the drama exposed risks about how OpenAI is run. When dealing with technology as powerful as AI, internal chaos helps no one.

Conclusion In the end, the board reversed their decision surprisingly fast. But the drama shook confidence and raised oversight concerns over OpenAI’s research direction. As AI like ChatGPT spreads, policymakers want standards and responsible development. So OpenAI still has much to prove if it wants to lead this technological revolution safely into the future.
