Good point. Clapping, as studied in orangutans, is now considered by anthropologists (or whatever they are) as a symbolic embrace. As such, an appearance after a performance, or an absence (orangutans), does seem to merit and warm ours hands into a slap-happy ‘Thank You’! Good point.
