President Obama just designated the Atlantic’s first-ever marine monument
The Obama White House

President Obama has done a lot like President Theodore Roosevelt long ago who created many national parks like the Grand Canyon, Yellow Stone, and Yosemite Parks. When in elementary and middle schools more than fifty years ago in Ghana, I read a lot of geography and continued later at college and University of Ghana. I read Alexander Dumas’ Jules Verne and 80 days Around the World, H.G. Wells’ Nautilus, Sir Edgar Alan Poe’s Montezuma etc. The Great Barrier Reef off the East Coast of Australia is in danger. Our ecosystem around the world is in disequilibrium because of pollution, over-fishing, over-exploitation, rapid population growth and pressure of demand for more goods. I listened with gusto to President Obama when he alluded to over-fishing and depletion of ocean resources. I think we need to place a moratorium on fishing and allow fishes to breed and restock. We need perhaps all of us to become vegetarians! A global conference should be called to discuss our eating habits, lifestyles, cultures etc which endanger the ocean. MNCs and TNCs should be taxed heavily for polluting the oceans. President Obama’s efforts at preserving global commons with this shining example should be applauded and should win him a Green Nobel Prize. If we do not take care, the world will be too dangerous to live in 200 years from now because of man’s unbridled greed. Warm regards. Dr Kwesi Atta Sakyi
