I think really the first thing you need to do is figure out what your view or opinion actually is. What about religion? Why does this topic matter to you? Why should it matter to other people? I think if you think about those questions you will have a much easier time creating focused paper. I would also suggest picking one aspect of religion that people could easily disagree about. Religion as a whole is a very complex topic and you would need a whole book to describe all of its complexities. Kind of like how Woolf wrote about women and fiction think religion and (insert topic). Religion and science? Religion and Law? Religion and abortion? Religion and gay rights? Religion and … Think about what really matters to you and hone in on it.
