Please, stop playing by the rules on Internet.

As a categorized Somewhat-Expert of Something by some people, I should warn you to follow each rules you meet. In fact, I’m not an expert.

I’m just fascinated about my job.

And that changes everything.

I often teach people how to act, react, manage and produce contents over the Internet. That’s a part of my job. But I don’t only do this.

Every-time I explain something about some Social Media platform, I warn people about the old netiquette. It was perfect when people used to respect it. Perfect, but it’d be boring without some actions against it.

Nowadays, there’s no more netiquette. There’s a grey link, quite hidden at the bottom of each form or webpage, called “Terms & Conditions”.

That’s my timing to have a great and passionate speech about reading, understanding and following those rules. Once done, I’d say:

“Please, forget one thing: to follow them.”

That’s true. I hate playing only by the rules. I love knowing the rules and pushing the limits. We should only know what’s allowed and what’s not.

I’m sure that you’d disagree with me at this point. Don’t you?

I believe that we can almost do everything on the Internet as long as it doesn’t break any rules. It can change a lot of things, including making big moves for brands but that’s another story.

Knowing the rules allows us to get out of the comfort zone of “this is what I can do”. It gets us out of the boring daily-routine of “this is our marketing plan and our trusted punchlines”. Please stop and try to think differently.

I always want to try something new each day. That’s why (it’s hard to admit it…) I kind-of love reading the terms & conditions of services that I use, to really understand what I can do and what I can try to do.

What about you? Let’s talk about it together!
