Habits are really important in Life. Habits define who we are and we do it repetitively without any second thoughts in our life. Since habits define us, the habits that we chose set the tone for our entire life. Habits are the basic building blocks of reaching any goal or succeeding in any plan. Want to become a different person? Just start a new habit in our life.

A legend bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger once said: “The resistance that you fight physically in the gym and the resistance that you fight in life can only build a strong character.” What he mentioned is actually true. We need to think like a bodybuilder, in order for us to achieve our goal in life, we need to set the tone of habits in life for us to build our character and mindset. Likewise, a bodybuilder builds their body in the gym with the exercise routine, discipline, focus and strict diet.

I once recall my experience of body physique competition 5 years ago. (Hottest Hunk 2012) Even though I did not win the competition but I gained an unforgettable experience. During the preparation, I drew a plan to achieve my physique goal, I prepare myself a rigorous exercise routine and focus my task and very disciplined about my diet. If we think closely, there’s a resemblance between the planning for competition and life. As we are creating a set of habits to achieve our goal in life. Here, I would like to share my thought about creating 7 ways for us to achieve our goal:

Plan

Before we achieve our goal, we need a plan, an objective, a purpose. It’s very important to set a goal in our life. What do we want, what it’s the thing we desire most. Likewise a company vision, a company cannot be able to succeed without a very brevity and concrete vision. We don’t want our lives to end up like a boat that wandering in the middle of the ocean without any destination.

Focus

I know it sounds cliché and overrated. There are numerous website and coach been emphatically stressing the importance of focus. But, there’s a misconception about focus, we thought focus are paying extra attention to the particular task or producing a clear vision definition for the goal. But the truth is how to say no to everything that is not aligned with our goal. It’s a discipline of mindset. Likewise, a bodybuilder saying no to unnecessary things that will distract the goal.

Relationship

There are many kinds of relationship, family, friends, partner. But the definition of relationship here is about those people who will motivate us and giving positive feedback and mindset in order for us to propel forward. Like the gym-buddy that workout and motivate each other to grow together. We share knowledge, sweat, pain, and motivation. Warren Buffet once said: ” It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.”

Knowledge

There’s famous quote that shares among people. “We are what we eat”. It just like a bodybuilder is very strict with their diets for them to achieve the peak of body physique. But we also don’t forget we need to treat our mind like a muscle. We are also what we read and feed to our mind so it will define us in a very profound way. It’s imperative for us to read, if we can be able to read 25 pages an hour, we can be able to finish a 175 pages book in a week. Instead of surfing the internet or stalking someone in the Facebook without any purpose, we should spend our time prudently.

Challenge

Muscle need stress to grow. So do our life. Bodybuilder gain more muscle by challenging them with heavier weight. Athlete trains themselves even more intensive to win in the competition. What challenge we need in order for us to grow? Remember, the muscle will not grow if we did not give them enough stress, we will not grow if we stuck in the same situation in life.

Activities

Of cause, life will be very boring without any entertainment or party. Once in a while, we need some break time to relax. It just like watching a movie we like, eat some cheat meal during the rest day, spend a few hours to thrash talk with friends. But beware, leisure is addictive. What kind of activities that really benefit ourselves, does the activity help us to grow? Instead of that, we can cultivate some good activity that can be able to expand our ability.

Patient

Everyone wants to see success overnight. Just like people wanna see the result quickly after they spent months in the gym. But we need to aware that gain and success is not measurable. Gain is non-linearity. Success is up and down. It’s hustling. It’s not an overnight result but dedication. What determines success it’s the time will eventually prove the result. We just have to keep on moving forward without any whining.

I know it sounds easy when writing on paper. But I believe what it works for me during the competition will eventually work for me in life. What we need is build good habits to propel forward and cultivate a very good mindset and character.

“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation…..We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

Aristotle, Greek Philosopher
