Movies I Watched in 2017
Another year, another metric ton of movies. My goal this year was to simply beat 2016 (100 new movies), and I did that in September with Gloria (a delight!!) and kept going! I reached 150 new movies by December 31st, ending things on a gentle note with Sweet Home Alabama.
2017 was the year I started Hawke Cast, a podcast focusing on the works of noted actor Ethan Hawke. It’s going well, and it’s helping expose me to movies I wouldn’t have seen otherwise! The Newton Boys is a blast! Never watch Brooklyn’s Finest!
Another thing I started doing was watching movies by directors I like to get a better sense of their ouvere. David Lynch, Mike Nichols, Todd Haynes, Richard Linklater… the list goes on. This process will definitely continue into 2018. I like having some method to my film watching; Listening to Blank Check helped me realize this. Kathryn Bigelow, I’m coming for you next! After Paul Thomas Anderson.
I’ve been keeping track of movies since 2013. It’s really cool to look back on five years of film and chart my cultural photosynthesis and where my interests have taken me.
2016 movies I missed
Krisha, 20th Century Women, Arrival, Hidden Figures, The Nice Guys, Manchester by the Sea, Paterson, Pete’s Dragon (This was really good), The Jungle Book, The BFG, OJ: Made in America.
