This post makes some excellent points, but is weakened in places by exaggeration.
Solitary work is something that only happens at the most junior levels, and even then it’s only possible because someone senior to you — most likely your manager — has been putting in long hours to build up the social structures in your group that let you focus on code.
Tell that to the guy that wrote the version control system used by nearly all the world’s software engineers, and the OS running on nearly all of Google’s servers.
I agree that engineering is a more social endeavor than most people imagine, but not everyone works in a corporation. No need to belittle the loners.
