He Hath Power Unto the Fulfilling of All His Words
But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men; for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. — 1 Nephi 9:6
This week has really been a trial of my faith. On Wednesday night I woke up at about 1 AM, and needless to say, my stomach did not feel good. I had a tummy bug that whole rest of the day, I was shaky and weak all day long. My companion, Sister Heyn, repeated that episode the following night. It was really a trial of faith for us to show Heavenly Father that we were willing to sacrifice all of our heart might, mind and strength to Him and His work. And oh, how he blessed us because of that trial!
This week, the Lord placed in our path so many people who are prepared to hear the gospel. One of those people is a friend of one of our investigators with a baptismal date. He showed up for one of our visits and he’s been at every visit since. He has been an alcoholic for most of his life, and he told us this amazing story that has helped him overcome his addiction to drugs. Here is his story:
About 3 weeks ago, I was low. I was so low I was at the bottom. I kept thinkin’ to myself, ‘I don’t want this anymore, I don’t wanna feel like this.’ Then somethin’ in my head kept sayin’, ‘You need to stop drinkin.’ And over and over again I kept thinkin’ that I just needed to stop usin’ drugs. I thought to myself, ‘well how can I stop?’ and a voice said to me ‘Love yourself. Just love yourself.’ I looked around thinkin’ someone was talkin’ to me, but there was no one there. And then I realized it was God tryin’ to tell me that I just need to love myself.
Ever since this experience, he has prayed every day and has been sober for almost 3 weeks. When we talked to him, we told him that there was a way for him to stop drinking and smoking in just 12 weeks. He is now going to the LDS Family Services 12-Step Program, and we are also teaching him. He reads the Book of Mormon every day, and is sky-rocketing towards baptism.
The Lord is truly placing people in our path who have desires to change. Just this Thursday, I was backing my companion out of a parking spot, and a young man named Jesus starting jogging over to us, trying to get our attention. We stopped the car in the middle of the parking lot while we talked with him. He said “are you from the Church or something?” I said, “Yeah! We’re missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Have you heard of the Church before?” He said he hadn’t, but he had a question: “I’m trying to stop smoking, and I was wondering if you could help me…” (Well of course!) So, we gave him a Word of Wisdom pamphlet, and set up a time to meet with him.
So, regardless of the fact that my companion and I were sick and frail for part of the week, the Lord was not about to let that get in the way of his work. He knew if we didn’t have the strength to go to the investigators, He would just have to send the investigators to us!
Heavenly Father knows each of us personally. He’s always going to be there if we simply have faith in Him and show it. When we strive to do His will, we will receive blessings. I know that this is the true church, and I am so grateful to be helping others know that as well.
p.s. The picture with me behind the car is when Jesus stopped us to talk to us!
