The future of the CMS

I fully agree—frankly, this was always my interpretation of what a CMS ought to be. Recently, I’ve been researching CMS platforms as I consider the possibilities for the ideal one for a project I’m working on. A cursory search yields many results overloading the term CMS with nothing more than a highly-coupled database driven website. This is not what I need! To your point, the website is only a portion of what I need. In fact, the website is secondary if not tertiary as what I’m desiring is a system that allows me to create and manage well-defined, structured content that I can make available with managed types to a variety of interfaces: web sites, desktop software, mobile apps, etc.
So we agree on the definition—where are our solutions?
