Let Me Introduce Myself

In June of 2011, I stood on the graduation stage in Vollrath Bowl anxiously waiting for my turn to address my fellow graduates. In that moment, I thought back on the last twelve years. I thought about Mrs. Leannah who helped me overcome my frustrations in learning to read as a first grader. I reflected on Mr. Thomas, who made every eighth grader excited to learn about American history. I thought about Jay Johnson and Mr. Kletzein at North and Mike Hanlon and Karen Robison at Etude who had pushed me to think critically and engage my community. I remembered the passion and care of Ms. Patti for every student that walked in her attendance office. It was humbling and inspiring to think of all of the educators and community members who invested in me and every other student sitting in Vollrath Bowl and made that moment possible. From that day forward, I never forgot the incredible gift I had received and the responsibility I had to pay it forward for the next generation of students.

My name is Kyle Whelton and I am running for School Board in the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD). Some of you may know who I am, but I know that many of you don’t and I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. I was born and raised right here in Sheboygan and could not be prouder of my city and my education in the Sheboygan Area School District. I grew up just off of North Avenue the son of a teacher and a pastor, simply a kid who loved school. As a student, I was deeply involved in theater and student council appearing in several shows and serving as president of my class.

I graduated from North High and Etude and headed off to Marquette University to study Political Science and History. In no time at all, I fell in love with Marquette’s mission and dedicated myself to serving others. My senior year, I had the honor of serving as President of Marquette University Student Government and working closely with the students, faculty, staff, and administrators of Marquette to improve the lives of students and the surrounding community. In May of 2015, I graduated from Marquette as the co-valedictorian of my class and headed out to Madison, WI to work for a company called Epic Systems as a Project Manager. In mid-2016, I returned home to Sheboygan where I now work for Acuity as a Business Systems Analyst and I couldn’t be happier to be back. When I am not working, you can find me volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, the Wisconsin Recovery Community Organization (WIRCO), or spending time with my favorite person in the whole world — my niece Carolyne.

So, why run for School Board?

Every opportunity that I have had began in the Sheboygan Area School District or was the result of the education I received in the SASD. I want nothing more than to be a part of ensuring that the next generation of students has the same opportunities that I had to grow and learn. I know firsthand what colleges demand of today’s students and what it is like to compete in a 21st century job market. I want to bring these insights to the board to ensure that our students graduate with the tools to get a job that gives them a shot at the middle class. I want to help build community partnerships that expand vocational training for students while giving back to Sheboygan.

I want to be your voice on the School Board, because the citizens and educators of the Sheboygan Area School District gave me everything and I owe it to you to try and repay that debt. I hope that I can count on your vote, Tuesday, April 4th.

Polls are open from 7am-8pm and you will need to show a photo I.D. You can find your polling location at https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/.
