A Ditty on Kym Byrnes

Hi Ms. Reavis. I wanted to take a few paragraphs to explain why I’m interested in a position with Linkup Marketing. Thanks for giving me your time.

I am a journalist by trade — with the past four years spent running a digital AOL news site in Maryland and freelancing for publications including The Baltimore Sun and Carroll Magazine. Managing a digital news site for AOL offered me the tremendous opportunity to use SEO strategies, social media, and technology to interact and engage with audiences. In fact, we were expected to stay ahead of the curve in these areas, relying heavily on analytics to improve traffic and understand the behavior of our audiences.

Prior to that, I spent a decade working on the other side of the media pitch — in increasingly responsible positions in nonprofit communications departments. As is the nature of nonprofit organizations, I was often a one-man communications department which truly helped me hone my skills in multitasking, project management and efficiently supporting multiple stakeholders, both internal and external. I was often forced to think outside the box to solve problems. While working as the Director of Communications at the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, I created a speakers bureau for our Girl Scout troops to help teach them public speaking skills and give them insights into the field of journalism. This helpd me as it provided a small army of young, competent girls who were engaged with their local media, pitching stories and sharing Girl Scout news.

Whether it is running a communications department or managing a digital news site, I have experience organizing and managing people, editorial calendars, communications plans, and clients.

For the past four years, I have worked remotely, from my couch, a coffee shop, the library, wherever I can find an inspiring view, a good snack and a comfortable chair. I live on the east coast — in the Baltimore area, but have the discipline to work remotely.

All that said — my experience in salons and spas is limited to using their services. It was evident when I thought I could trim up my son’s hair last week that I have no business putting scissors anywhere close to anyone’s hair. But I do understand writing and working with clients and building a brand and promoting an image.

Thanks for letting me introduce myself, in a blog format no less. I hope I have the opportunity to speak with you about the position and my experience in more detail.

Best,
Kym Byrnes
