3 Mindset Shifts That Happen in Your 30s

There’s no doubt you’ve heard the famous phrase,“30 is the new 20.” More and more adults dedicate their 30s, instead of their 20s, to laying the foundation of adulthood through career moves, family changes, and major financial decisions (home ownership, anyone?).

But truly, the 30s are a decade unlike any other — especially for women.

If you’re approaching this milestone birthday or are already thirty and thriving, you’ve probably noticed at least a few mental changes.

Here are 3 shifts in the mindset to be aware of as you make the most of this great decade.

Shift 1# Prepare for the Personality Plaster to Harden

By 30, you’re more you than you’ve ever been. You’ve probably noticed that you’re settling into your personality and know what you like (and don’t like) when it comes from everything to relationships to your career. You’re less likely to develop sweeping personality changes during these years. According to the behavioral scientist, Paul T. Costa Jr., who you are now is probably who you’ll be at 70 and beyond.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t change, but it’ll require more effort on your part. If there are things you’d like to improve or skills you’d like to develop, make incremental changes, so they’ll stick.

But above all, embrace who you are and let the world see you shine!

Shift 2 # Get Ready for Major Career Growth and Changes

Major career developments, changes, and accomplishments often take place during your 30s. It stands to reason that as your personality “hardens” (so to speak) and you have a better idea of your interests and skills, you’re more likely to find a job that suits you.

Women in their 30s often see their salaries increase a good deal, according to PayScale. Salaries for women peak around age 39 at $60,000 while men do not hit their salary peak until around age 48 at $95,000. (Just more evidence that the wage gap is very, very real). In other words, the jobs (and salaries) you take on during this decade will have a significant impact on your earning potential in just a few short years.

If you’re struggling to find your footing career-wise, you’re not alone. Some researchindicates that job satisfaction is lowest for those in their late 20s to early 40s. Outside stressors like raising a family, managing relationships, and finding time to “get it all done” are big factors. Now is the time to pivot in your career if you’re getting the itch to change things. Job satisfaction can have a big effect on your health (both mental and physical) in your 40s.

Shift 3# Harmony Rules When It Comes to Friendship and Family

Quality time with friends probably no longer means painting the town red every weekend. While you may still enjoy nights out, the focus tends to shift to making memories and indulging a little (at least in trips better than you could afford in your 20s). But you’ll also find yourself juggling family, friends, and your career more than you did in the previous decade.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself seeking friendships that easily integrate with your life — whether they be in found in work, volunteer organizations, or at places of worship. The need for harmony is stronger than ever before!
