My Outfit Moves — With a Life of Its Own!

Ruhee was born in America, but she is Indian at heart. Like most American born Indian girls she grew up watching Bollywood movies. She has always wanted to look like the beautiful actresses in Indian cinema, but it’s hard for a curvy girl to find the perfect Indian outfit. If a lehenga looks good, it is hard to dance in it, and if it is easy to wear, it doesn’t look that good. In the pursuit of the perfect outfit, she went everywhere in India without luck.

The problem is that the average waist size of a woman ranges from about 28–40 inches, but stores in India rarely carry anything past a UK size 8. For a culture that is so obsessed with extravagant weddings, one would think that the market would accommodate brides of all shapes and sizes. However, this is not the case.

All the ads in India for clothes, accessories, and jewelry promote a slim look that is a size 0 and below, and unfortunately, many outfits are still made for the stereotype “perfect” body shape.

Ruhee recalled one event in Mumbai in 2013: “It’s a shame you’re not skinnier because you have a beautiful face. You should drop ten kgs if you want to find a lehenga or you should settle with pieces from a local designer rather than a store.” a shopkeeper told her.

Ruhee looked stunning in the outfit we made for her, and she not only wore it but danced the night away with her sister, performing a Kathak/Bharatnatyam fusion in front of all their family and friends.
