Aloha, everyone! My name is Kyrie Bartolome, and I am proud to be one of the recipients of the 2024 Paubox Kahikina STEM Scholarship. I am approaching my final week as a Junior at the Oregon Institute of Technology, where I have been working towards my bachelor’s degree in general ultrasound with a focus on abdomen small parts and OBGYN. Starting this July, I will be moving to Longview, Washington to complete my unpaid 11-month senior externship at a local hospital. During this time, I will have the opportunity to work with patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric populations. I am so excited for this new chapter in my life, as I get to make a community impact and work with innovation and technology.

As a STEM major specializing in medicine, my scope of practice involves utilizing ultrasound physics and sonographic pathology to assist radiologists in diagnosing and developing treatment plans for patients. This challenging yet rewarding career requires significant critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I am passionate about becoming an ultrasound technologist because it will allow me to help others while fostering both professional and personal growth.

As a recipient of this scholarship, I am extremely grateful for Paubox’s efforts to provide Native Hawaiian students the chance to pursue careers in the STEM field. Seeing local businesses support the new generation of Hawaiian professionals is what makes this scholarship so rewarding. Achieving this scholarship has taught me the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance all of which my ancient Hawaiian ancestors had.

I sincerely appreciate Hoala Greevy and Paubox for their dedication to helping students. Their contributions go unnoticed, and I would not be where I am today without them. For any aspiring Native Hawaiian STEM majors, I highly encourage you to apply for this scholarship!
