What Genre Contains the Most Controversial Movies?

Throughout history, controversial movies have come from a plethora of genres. Beginning in the early 1900’s, movies have sparked controversy revolving around many different topics. They have sparked many negative emotions and even started some riots/protests. Although it can be said that controversial movies come from a whole range of genres, they are generally comedy and horror movies.

One of the most recent movies that sparked controversy was 2016 movie, Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds. The movie is classified as a comedy movie and sparked much controversy towards parents and guardians. Although it is a superhero movie, it certainly is not for children. Due to it’s raunchy jokes and inappropriate language, parents are pissed. Usually superhero movies are targeted towards kids and don’t contain strong language. Despite its R rating, parents still took their children to see the movie. According to Karina Bland’s article, Even Deadpool Told Parents Not to Take Kids to This Movie. They Did Anyway, “ I skimmed the rows behind us and saw what looked like a 5-year-old with his grandparents, a couple of 7- or 8-year-olds, and the girl from the concession stand line who looked about 10.” This made parents skeptical towards movies and what their kids should and should not be exposed to.

Another recent movie that was controversial was 2012 comedy movie, The Dictator. This movie, as described by IMDb, “The heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” This movie made a lot of people mad, especially Arab-Americans; they believe the movie is taking a jab at their culture and encourages some of the stereotypes of their culture. According to Josh Grossberg’s article on eonline.com, Nadia Tonova (director of the National Network for Arab American Communities) claims, “And I feel it’s harmful to the discourse, especially these days when we are seeing the number of profiling incidents here in the U.S. against Arab Americans.”

Although the majority of controversial movies are horror and comedy, they can come from other genres. For instance, 2017 family movie, A Dog’s Purpose caused much controversy due to a video that was released and spread through social media. The video contained evidence of animal abuse and neglect behind the scenes of the movie. Many people, especially animal lovers, found the video very disturbing and outlashed the movie on their social media profiles. Although this was a family movie, it still was controversial despite not being a comedy or horror film. Parents may be more likely to argue that these kinds of movies are more controversial- especially since they are more personal and reach their children.

Evidence points more towards horror and comedy movies containing more controversy rather than any other genres.
