International Coffee Day!
Calling all coffee lovers! This Friday, September 29th, is International Coffee Day! Gather your cold brews and brush up on your latte art because your day has come. We got the inside scoop from coffee expert, Marianne Cordillo of Cupa Cabana Espresso & Coffee Catering on how to have the best coffee around. Grab your favorite cup of joe and take at look at what she had to say.
1. What are the biggest trends in coffee right now?
Customization and branding are still key elements for any event, and that now includes the coffee. Our latest trend is our “Coffee Art” which is customization in the dusting on the top of the drink. It also includes our latest #hashtag coffee.
2. What are your coffee and espresso recommendations? Where should we be buying from?
We should be buying from 3rd wave coffee producers — They would be your local roasters.
Also, some of the smaller coffee shops who do not do their own roasting have sourced their beans from reputable roasters, so they support the Fair-Trade initiatives of the coffee industry.
3. Is there an easy way to create latte or coffee art? (A heart or smiley perhaps)
Yes, the easiest way to create latte art is with a stylus or toothpick. Simply insert it through the foam and “pull out” the espresso creama to the top through the foam and make your design with it.
4. What do you need to make your own cold brew at home?
Let’s take the mystery out of cold brew. It’s actually very simple. All you need is 1 lb. of coffee ground (I like mine a little finer than drip coffee), a cheesecloth bag, a bucket with a cover, a cheesecloth strainer and 1 gallon of room temperature water.
Place the coffee in the cheesecloth bag and place it in the bucket of water. Cover and let it sit for 16 hours. Once it has brewed, strain, add ice and enjoy!
5. What makes for the best espresso?
The grind is the most important part of espresso, as this determines how flavorful or bitter the finished product will be. The grind is also very susceptible to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. The grind will need to be adjusted as these factors change throughout the day or event in order to maintain the most flavorful espresso drink.
6. Are there any unusual flavors that are a MUST try right now in coffee?
The hottest new flavors right now are Maple and Churro — must try selections for the fall.
7. What are your rules for making the best cup of coffee? (What are easy changes that we can make to our coffee routine?)
If you’re already starting with a good coffee and you grind it fresh daily or at least weekly and keep it in an airtight container, the next most important factor is the water you use. Filtered water will provide you with more of the coffee flavor you’re looking for and it won’t be tainted with chemicals or impurities from the water.
