So I just want to share a movie that I stumbled across last night. ‘Homeless to Harvard’

  • Based on a true story. Liz Murray is a young girl who is taken care of by her loving, but drug-addicted parents. Liz becomes homeless at 15 and after a tragedy comes upon her, she begins her work to finish high school. (Source: IMDB)

The movie started off with an uncomfortable and unsettling scene of her childhood and the living condition she was in with both her parents being drug addicts, her not knowing how to take care of herself nor going to school. She was barely ten. As the movie progressed, it portrayed how she experienced and overcame the difficult changes in her life from trying to keep up with surviving to being sent to a home, to managing relationships at home and struggling with school At 15, she left home and was homeless although she did visit her mother who later passed. A few months later, she decided to take charge of her life, signed up for school and worked so hard that she completed 4 years of high school in 2, while working; to eventually winning scholarship to get into Harvard. You have to watch it for yourself.

‘Homeless to Harvard’ is such an inspiring and touching movie even after 12 years it was made.

The movie also showed the world her fighting spirit to live and her love for her family, especially her mother despite being ‘betrayed’ and left to fend for herself during her childhood. It was really heart wrenching to see a child go through that, with so much hope and love but having to accept the fact that some things would never change.

I guess my takeaway from the movie is that no matter how down in the rut you are in, as long as you believe in yourself, you will overcome these challenges.

Although some may argue that she did it because she’s clever. Yes, she is smart, but she also worked very hard for it. She knew what she wanted, and when opportunities showed up, she grabbed them!

For those of you in worse situation that she had been, don’t ever give up and don’t stop fighting. I hope this message reach you somehow. If you are in a better situation, make use of your environment, grab opportunities when you see them, develop yourself to be better and rise above the situation. This movie touched me as much as I hope it will also give you hope, inspiration and motivation to keep fighting for what you believe in, to reach where the light shines at the end of the tunnel. If she can do it, you can too. If this movie resonates with you, please share the inspiration with someone whom you think will benefit from it. I did.
