We are thrilled to announce that we have decided to support the xDai Stable Chain as its 10th validator and were voted by the existing validators through on-chain governance to join the network.

The xDai Stable Chain

The xDai Stable Chain has been initiated by our friends at POA Network. It is an Ethereum sidechain with bridged Dai serving as a native token to the xDai Stable Chain. Dai’s can be transferred seamlessly between the two chains. In contrast to Ethereum, the xDai Stable Chain is specifically designed to support fast transactions (the xDai Stable Chain has a block times of 5/sec) and low, predictable gas fees. …

Let’s face it; there is a lot of hype and buzz around blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. Most of it is driven by speculation while real life use cases are still very clumsy at least. However, it is also safe to say that due to the superiority of open, public, trustless blockchain systems compared to today’s siloed financial system, the migration of global assets over to decentralized permissionless blockchains is inevitable.

Therefore, at lab10 collective we believe we should better start educating students rather sooner than later and instead of purely focusing on theory, we think that real life interactive exercises will go a long way too. …

The lab10 collective Partners with POA Network

Today, we’re excited to announce that lab10 collective is partnering up with POA Network. We will join forces on multiple open-source initiatives we mutually share interest in.

ARTIS, the blockchain initiated by lab10 collective relies on the on-chain consensus and governance protocol developed by POA Network and is currently the only working 2nd layer Ethereum scaling solution. This joint technology base results in a lot of technical overlaps and made us adopt multiple initiatives started by POA. Such is the interoperability bridge to EVM and Blockscout, POA’s open source blockchain explorer.

As part of the partnership we will be working together on pushing the Honey Badger BFT consensus mechanism into production environment on both chains. This development is carried out in Rust and is being integrated in Parity. Expect us to jointly inform our communities about the progress with this exciting new technology in future posts. …

We are happy to announce that lab10 collective has been selected to receive support from the Gnosis Ecosystem Fund (GECO).

GECO was inaugurated end of 2018 with the mission to support the devolvement of the ecosystem around the Gnosis platform. Since then the first grants have been released and now a new batch is following right after. We are part of the second batch.

What We Will Build

In a previous post we have already covered our participation at Infineon’s hackathon that took place in April 2019 in Graz, Austria. That event has granted us first hand access to Infineon’s NFC enabled cold storage and signature card. …

Announcing the Kovan testnet upgrade.

The lab10 collective has used the Kovan testnet as its preferred choice to test bridges and various smart contracts. It is one of the first publicly accessible Proof of Authority (PoA) blockchains for Ethereum, to aid the developer community. We consider Kovan as one of the best testnets that works fast and is integrated into many ethereum eco-system tools. It is a perfect testbed to quickly iterate and experiment. Given our work on the ARTIS blockchain these qualities make it an integral part of our staging environment.

Validator Consortium

When Parity announced the end of the their support of the Kovan testnet we were convinced that the story cannot end here and it seems we were not the only ones to think so. POA Network stepped up and organized a pool of 4 validators to come together and support the network further. Consequently a pull request has been conducted. The validator pool will consist of the POA Network, Polymath Network, Peppersec and lab10 collective respectively. All participants have committed to keep this network alive, follow all necessary upgrades and promote it as a decisive testnet within the Ethereum ecosystem. …

Here at Lab10 Cooperative we have embarked on a journey to build the infrastructure and end user products to support society’s transition towards a fair, ethical and free data economy. We believe for such an economy to manifest individuals need to be equipped with the ability to control their own data, identity and money in a decentralized manner, with the elimination of third party point of failure.

In this article I’ll explain the importance of a truly decentralized infrastructure for web3 to unfold, explain how DAppNode is adding an important piece to the puzzle, showcase you the ease of creating your DAppNode Package with the help of the DAppNode SDK and give a short glimpse into how we will utilize DAppNode on ARTIS Sigma1 mainnet, a scalable Ethereum sidechain connected via bridges. …

Many people may not know that the second biggest city of Austria, Graz is home to a major European technology cluster. A lot of innovation particularly in the areas of automotive and semiconductors originate from there and so does critical contribution to the RFID and NFC standards.

Therefore, it comes without surprise that Infineon — a leading semiconductor and sensory manufacturer — has tasked its engineering team in Graz to look for NFC enabled blockchain security solutions. What the team has then developed is the rather cryptic sounding “Blockchain Security 2Go”-Card. …

The ARTIS project was started 2017 with the intent to make a serious contribution to the public Blockchain space, highlighting fair and broad coin distribution in connection with the new feature of streaming money. Intense communication was started on how we intend to build up the infrastructure and how to use Streems for various use cases. This led to the ARTIS Kick-Off event in April 2018 at the WU Wien and preparation for a token sale in Oktober 2018.

Throughout the last months we came to the conclusion that the ICO / ITO space has become more and more toxic and highly fraudulent, and we have therefore decided to cancel the ARTIS token sale. With the ITO out of the window, we’re given the opportunity to revisit the ARTIS schedule and adapt it to new realities and knowledge. …

The lab10 collective eG is involved in a renewable energy project launched in Austria. This is how it all began: The FFG (Forschungs Förderungs Gesellschaft, Austria) provided a grant to build a new Innovation Lab (ENICS — Energy Innovation Cluster Südburgenland) for regenerative energy. Coupled with that, the project SonnWende+ was also given the green light.

The project consortium is led by AIT (Austrian Institute of Technology), the partners in this project are the Energy Institute — Johannes Kepler University Linz and the lab10 collective eG. …

The quest for viable online business models in the press and media industry is as old as the World Wide Web itself. Why online advertising is harmful to quality journalism, micro payments don’t work and how anonymous one-click subscriptions could enable sustainable accounting models.

As early as in the 90’s, a business model emerged on the Internet which put human attention at its core: Advertising. What was born out of necessity became a culturally ingrained custom. While payment options do exist today, the willingness to pay is lacking. Paywalls for online subscriptions or micro payments for individual articles work only to some extent and are still — after twenty years of experimenting — an exception. Instead, the concept of zero marginal cost seems to be taken quite literally and is demanded by customers. …
