Great article. Being a fitness coach I am very interested in getting the opportunity to train athletes in this profession. As E-Sports grows as a viable profession, the need for athletic training to optimize the performance of these athletes could very well be the difference between winning and and losing at the highest level.
What are the Fitness needs of these athletes that will allow them to be at the top of their game?
- Mental Acuity gained through staying active and getting blood flow day-in and day-out. What they do when they are not behind the screen training in their profession is HUGE for them. Easy to moderate AM aerobic training before their day of training would have a huge impact towards achieving this. (on top of getting 8 hours of quality sleep each night)
- Core Strength — these guys are required to sit 12+ hours per day for their training — they NEED postural endurance. Proper breathing patterns, a 2+minute Sorenson hold, and in general some good closed kinetic chain work are great markers for them.
- Hand/Wrist/Arm/Shoulder/Scapular Endurance — for both supporting upper body posture and making sure that they don’t get fatigued to the point of decreasing performance through long sessions.
I could go on, especially on nutrition and lifestyle practices. Point is, I would love to get in touch with some coaches/managers of these pro teams and start building a conversation around this need. I think they would be amazed at the gains in their team’s performance.
