Hi. I am Labina. I am one of UI Designer intern at DOT Indonesia. I am an undergraduate student here in Brawijaya University, Indonesia, majoring Information System.

A few weeks ago, I was asked to make an internal project app for DOT Indonesia. It’s called DOT Intern. Actually, that was my first time designing an app using the proper mechanism, you know like — using a real working framework like SCRUM — . I experienced designing for some mobile or web apps. But DOT Intern app is the app that has enhanced my design knowledge-- at least recognizing the importance of pixel perfect — but still, I am a rookie.

Before telling about DOT Intern app, firstly I am going to share my projects recap there in DOT Indonesia. The first day at DOT Indonesia, I was asked to redesign a website. It came from a company called “Pamapersada”, one of the major distributor of Komatsu heavy equipment in Indonesia. The design was used to be the proposal before making any M.O.U with the client. The first challenge was I had to abstract the requirements that came from Analyst into design. After doing some pair-designing with one of UI Designer in DOT Indonesia, I have got some insights to note. Like paying attention to font size or the other design component size. Cause I’d know that the designs would be seriously implemented — coded.

Few days ahead, I got some internal projects directly from DOT Indonesia’s CTO — thanks to his insightful words and pieces of advice (Ardi Imawan). The internal small project called Marketing Tool for Internal DOT. It’s based on web application. Any DOT employees that have an access to log into that can view the DOT website analysis, and also for HRD employee can also request for recruitment.

Time went by. The next project was DOT Intern app. The reason why we develop this app is to ease the employees there at DOT to record the intern task. Like for example; Rena — you name it — as DOT employee wants one of an intern to do some tasks. Then the intern accepts it, then she/he will accomplish the task. DOT doesn’t have any record system to assess their interns. Then DOT Intern app was born. The actual purpose to build the app is to review intern accomplished task, record intern accomplished task data and ease DOT Employees as Assigner to assess intern tasks.

I mentioned SCRUM in the first paragraph. Oh! I also have a team. My team consists of a few students from vocational high school. They have their own each job descriptions like Android Developer, QA Engineer, Back-end developer, and me myself as UI Designer. Okay, so the DOT Intern has two apps. The first app is for the DOT employees, and the rest is for the interns.

The first thing we did was conducting the Sprint Planning. We also defined the logo.

DOT Intern app logo.

I honestly have no idea how to resize this image into a smaller size, cause it apparently has no option to alter that.

Okay, so this is the logo for the app. The topper logo is the original logo for my internship place. So basically I placed the ‘intern’ wording below the original DOT logo.

The sprint planning produced few things regarding how the project would go. We defined the user requirements, logo, organize the Trello, and so on so forth. Once we finally defined the requirements, I transformed those requirements into designs.

Okay, so here’s the recap of app flow. For the DOT Intern App (Magang/Intern), firstly, they as Intern is to create the task once they got the order from employee to accomplish the task. After that, the notification will be delivered to Employee app, that’s called DOT intern App (Karyawan/Intern). Then the task is ready to be reviewed or assessed. The reviews are based on 3 things or attributes; ie, quality, punctuality, and also the attitude.

My Android Developer developed and implemented the mockup that I have shared in collaboration tool, they’re placed in Zeplin. Zeplin has a bunch of benefits for us as a team. Any designers should know this already. Here’s the link that introduces you to Zeplin.

The designs were already implemented. Considering I am a rookie designer, the apk was built, and…

It’s out of expectation. Guess who was wrong. Me. I designed the mobile app for 720x1280 (xhdpi). So the design components that were placed within are completely messy. Okay, I think this will be a separated article to write and read, there are source and reference in Medium that discusses regarding this thing. Long story short, I altered all of the designs into 360x640px (mdpi — 1x).

The next thing, we conducted the Sprint Planning in the next week. We ‘ve got some reviews from the Product Owner. It’s all about the size, and other crucial components that have been receded from my mind. And also I got some inputs from the other full-time Designer there at DOT. Once we refined all the things including mockup, the implementation. We got this on the last sprint:

That’s all. Thank you for reading! : )
