Tony McDade. Rayshard Brooks. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Arbery. George Floyd.

These five individuals and the many more Black Americans who have died as a result of a long legacy of systemic racism in America deserve justice. The officers involved in their deaths must be held to account. Our country must understand that the issue of police brutality disproportionately meted out against Black Americans is only one part of our country’s century-long legacy of racial inequality, and a system that has not fully valued Black lives.

Black lives matter. All Black lives matter.

We are sending this statement to you on Juneteenth, when the last enslaved persons gained their freedom in Texas in 1865. We want to acknowledge today as a day of commemoration, healing, and reflection as we continue to work towards the point at which we can truly celebrate the freedom of all individuals in America. …

Early in your career, it’s important to have as much support as you can. Mentors are talked about often, but we don’t talk about sponsors as much, and they are just as important!

Why does this matter?

If it’s your first job in an industry and you don’t have much context to work with, it’s important to have both. A mentor can serve as a sympathetic confidant, and a career sponsor has a seat at the table and can advocate for your promotion.
