These five individuals and the many more Black Americans who have died as a result of a long legacy of systemic racism in America deserve justice. The officers involved in their deaths must be held to account. Our country must understand that the issue of police brutality disproportionately meted out against Black Americans is only one part of our country’s century-long legacy of racial inequality, and a system that has not fully valued Black lives.
