International food workers congress opens in Geneva

The International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF) will be holding its 27th congress this week in Geneva.

The IUF is an international federation of trade unions representing workers employed in agriculture and plantations; the preparation and manufacture of food and beverages; hotels, restaurants and catering services; all stages of tobacco processing. With a financial membership of 2,5 million the IUF is composed of 434 affiliated trade unions in 130 countries representing over 10 million workers in IUF sectors.

While the congress itself does not officially open until tomorrow, conferences have already taken place in the run-up to the main event. These include the regular IUF Women’s Conference on Saturday, and for the first time ever, a Young Workers conference and an LGBTI conference on Sunday.
