What is it about Unicorns, which hold such fascination?

Unicorns — Do you love or hate them?

They say you either love something or hate something — many call it a “Bovril or Marmite moment’! But is it really possible to hate Unicorns? Perhaps you hold an indifference towards them, as if you’ve never given them a thought or a second glance but to hate them?

On the other hand to love Unicorns means that they show up on your radar and then they are E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E! 🦄

You notice: the kids in the supermarkets are wearing unicorn hats and various unicorn clothing; the Grocery Store seem inundated in Unicorn mugs and plateware and even the esteemed Larry Kim has written a blog on ‘Medium’ about Unicorn Leadership. (It’s a classic by the way — do give it heaps of claps!)

I have been persuaded by my daughter, a primary school teacher who sees the latest unicorn craze everyday in the classroom, to write a children’s book about a Little Unicorn.

Here is an unashamedly plug for it here — plus extras like a unicorn keyring, Tshirt/hoodie or toy!

Unicorns the mystical creatures appeared in pictures back in the 15th hundred, Raphael’s picture ‘The Lady and the Unicorn’. This has lead to many questioning the appearance of Unicorns — is it a dog, a deer or something else? It certainly doesn’t look much like the horse-like creature we associate with Unicorn’s today!

As someone who loves the Bible — I was delighted to learn that Unicorns are mentioned in this wonderful book — 8 times. You need to go to an old King James version to find it, as modern versions have changed the word Unicorn to Ox.

It features in Numbers (23:22 & 24:8), Deuteronomy (33:17), Job (39:9–12), the Psalms (22:21, 29:6, 92:10) and Isaiah (34:7) — WOW.

Personally, I’m of the view that the original unicorn was a cloven creature rather than a hoofed one. But regardless, they are wonderful and I love them.

Unicorns have inspired many artists; painters, songwriters (who can forget the 1968 The Unicorn song, written by Shel Silverstein and selling over 8 million copies for The Irish Rovers) and writers. Can you name a book or story which features a Unicorn?

As for you, dear reader, can I make the assumption that you too love Unicorns? After all, you have read to the end of this article!
