OVERVIEW:

Dell is used to disappointment. Ever since her dad left, it’s been one let down after another. But no one — not even her best friend — understands all the pain she’s going through. So Dell hides behind self-deprecating jokes and forced smiles.

Then the one person she trusts betrays her. Dell is beyond devastated. Without anyone to turn to for comfort, her depression and self-loathing spin out of control. But just how far will she go to make all the heartbreak and the name-calling stop?

REVIEW:

Empty is a book about Adele, she is overweight and she is a victim of bullying. Adele hides her feeling by joking and by laughing at jokes when she is asked to “mooooo” in front of her school mates. She started gaining weight when her dad left them for another woman. She got so depressed and she started to eat a lot of food to fill up the emptiness and the void that she feels. Her mom started using pills and she’s always spaced out. So Adele is now responsible for her baby sister Meggie, she loves and adores her. Adele has a best friend named Cara, but they don’t really connect that much. Cara is shallow and she wants to be part of the popular girls group and she craves attention from them. But she is all that Adele has. They finally got invited to the popular group’s party and that’s when the biggest problem Adele ever faced happened… She got raped by Brandon. He is the very popular jock from school and the biggest jerk. He asked Adele to keep her mouth shut. Adele didn’t tell anyone not even her mother and her best friend. Brandon started to spread rumors that he got raped by Adele; of course people would believe him over Adele, because why would the most popular guy in school rape Adele, the overweight outcast in their school. The sad part was even Cara think that it was Adele’s fault.

This book is such a powerful book about bullying, effects of divorce and how parents should be more active in their children’s lives. It broke my heart because this stuff really happens and most victims of rape don’t speak up because they are scared and they think that no one would believe them. I recommend this book especially for teens.
