LAFD Week in Review 2.12.16


This week, your LAFD responded to 9,733 calls and took 4,693 people to the hospital. Here’s a brief glimpse behind the scenes at what else happened:
Saturday / Sunday
Around 1 a.m. Saturday, about 100 firefighters battled a dangerous structure fire in Downtown L.A. Firefighters responded to 1138 Los Angeles St. to find a one-story pre-1933 commercial building with smoke showing.
Firefighters forced entry through the front of the garment store and began an aggressive attack on the entrenched flames.

It took Firefighters less than 35 minutes to fully extinguish a large pile of combustibles at a Pacoima recycling yard early Sunday.


A man and woman were tragically killed, while another man escaped with minor injuries Sunday when their compact sedan struck a Boyle Heights home. The car careened off a residential roadway and overturned, before colliding with and severely damaging a one story home on the 1500 block of Pleasant Avenue.

Firefighters conduct overhaul operations on a home in South Los Angeles that sustained significant damage from a fire Sunday.





Monday
A break in action Monday allowed Firefighters at Van Nuys’ Fire Station 39 to compete against each other and see who could most quickly don their personal protective equipment. How fast would you be able to equip yourself with 80 pounds of gear, including turnouts, an axe, and the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus?
Calling all young women:

Tuesday
A greater alarm fire Tuesday morning in the central industrial district of Downtown L.A. gutted a metal fabricating firm and sent two firefighters to the hospital.
The Los Angeles Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 7:40 a.m. Firefighters arrived quickly at 1361 E. Newton St., to battle flames that already roared through the roof of a one-story 5,000 square foot industrial building.

Your LAFD Firefighters worked hard during a warm day Tuesday to stop a large fire in from spreading beyond a South L.A. home. When firefighters arrived, the large fire was minutes from jumping to neighboring homes before crews got a handle, knocked down flames and reunited a relieved owner with her dog.


Crews quickly attacked an intense patio fire Tuesday on the 6000 block of Morella Avenue in North Hollywood. Firefighters also rescued a cat unharmed from the smoke-charged residence.





Wednesday
Students from Chatsworth’s Sierra Canyon School this week had the opportunity to visit fire stations in the San Fernando Valley. During their Peak Week, in which students enroll in experiential courses, students watched probationary drills at Panorama City’s Drill Tower 81, participated in conditioning exercises and visited stations in Porter Ranch (FS28), Northridge (FS87) and Sherman Oaks (FS88).





LAFD Central Bureau Deputy Chief Phillip Fligiel congratulated Gustavo Perez Wednesday who promoted from Apparatus Operator to Captain I into Fire Station 14, serving the Newton area of Los Angeles.

Thursday

Friday
Crews handled a fire in Koreatown before noon Friday. One vacant unit and an attic lit with flames as 50 firefighters spent 24 minutes knocking it down.
