LAFD Week in Review 2.5.16

This week, your LAFD responded to 9,462 calls and took 4,392 people to the hospital. Here’s a brief glimpse behind the scenes at what else happened:

Saturday/Sunday
Hundreds from throughout Southern California came to Drill Tower 81 in Panorama City Saturday for the first of four LAFD Recruitment Expos. Led by Councilmember Nury Martinez and Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas, potential recruits had the opportunity to see all the opportunities the Los Angeles Fire Department has to offer. The next recruitment expo is scheduled for Feb. 20.

Monday
The call came in just after 5 a.m. on Monday. A commercial building at 3019 N. Fiero St. in Glassell Park was on fire. Flames ripped through the structure, smoke billowed from the building.

On the day the Los Angeles Fire Department marked its 130th year as a professional firefighting service, more than 150 firefighters battled a massive blaze fueled by wind that extended into nearby structures.
At 5:18 a.m., two employees notified 9–1–1 of the fire. Moments later, firefighters arrived on scene to find a large industrial commercial area with outdoor combustible storage and a corrugated steel building well involved in fire.
Firefighters were met by several challenges.

On Feb. 1, 1886, the LAFD shifted from an all-volunteer force to a professional firefighting unit. We took a look back at the history.
It was 1869 and Los Angeles was a city on the rise. Just 19 years earlier, in 1850, Los Angeles was incorporated as California officially joined the United States to take its place on the world stage. A growing population necessitated a firefighting force that resulted in the Los Angeles Volunteer Fire Department, pictured below. As the city grew, leaders of Los Angeles worked toward creating a more full time force to serve its residents and infrastructure.

Tuesday
A relatively quiet today allowed us to get in some important reminders:
Wednesday
Firefighters battled an early morning fire on the Roosevelt High School campus Wednesday when 18 metal and plastic trashcans across the campus were set on fire. Quick work by firefighters contained the series of small fires to one structure — the plant manager’s office, a detached bungalow seen in the video below. The fire was primarily contained to the exterior with only smoke damage inside and no injuries. Police and the LAFD Arson Unit are investigating.
Tragedy struck in West Hills Wednesday when two people died in a converted garage fire.
At 10:04 a.m. your LAFD in responded to a reported structure fire on the 22500 block of Vanowen Street. With smoke visible behind the house, firefighters made their way around to find a detached garage well involved with fire. Under the command of LAFD Valley Bureau Assistant Chief Greg Reynar, 32 firefighters extinguished the fire in just 17 minutes. Sadly, while conducting a search inside the occupancy, firefighters discovered the bodies of two victims.

Thursday
Family, friends and city leaders gathered in San Pedro Thursday to celebrate the graduation of 45 recruits from the LAFD training academy at Drill Tower 40. The joyous occasion capped a rigorous, 20-week training curriculum aimed at preparing them for a successful career with the LAFD. Congratulations to all!

Friday
Are you ready for the 101 Slow Jam? Mayor Eric Garcetti reminds us all that the 101 near Downtown will be shut down for just 40 hours while the 6th Street bridge is demolished.
